What's the actual difference between pruning and lopping?

We get this a lot: someone calls wanting their tree "lopped" because it's grown too big for the yard. Fair enough. But when we ask a few questions, what they actually need is pruning, and the difference matters more than most people realise.

It Sounds like Semantics. It isn't.

- Pruning is a considered process. An arborist looks at the tree's structure, figures out which branches are dead, crossing, diseased, or causing a hazard, and removes them at the right point. The tree keeps its shape and its health.

- Lopping is the opposite. It's cutting branches back to a stub, wherever they happen to fall, usually to make a tree smaller in a hurry. It might look tidy for a season. Underneath, the tree is often in trouble.

Why Lopping Causes Problems Down the Track

When a tree is lopped, it responds to the stress by throwing out a burst of weak, fast growth around the wound. That regrowth is poorly attached, which means it's more likely to snap in wind or storms, sometimes onto a house, car, or fence. The tree is also left more open to decay and disease at the cut sites.

- It's also worth knowing that many councils have restrictions and heavy regulations around lopping, particularly on significant or protected trees, so it's not always a straightforward job to begin with. As regulations vary by region, it's worth checking before any major work goes ahead. For areas on the Gold Coast, Logan or Brisbane council regions, it is recommended to seek approval prior to commencing any significant tree works.

Most of the time, what people actually want (a safer, tidier, smaller tree) is achievable through proper pruning. It just takes a bit more skill and a bit more time.
